DBT  Skills System
In the Fall of 2018 - 3B staff were trained in and began implementation of The Emotion Regulation Skills System by Julie F. Brown, MSW, PhD. She is the Director of Program Development at Justice Resource Institute's Integrated Clinical Services in Rhode Island. Informed by the principles and practices of dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), "Skills System" presents skills training guidelines specifically designed for individuals with cognitive challenges. Clinicians lead one skills group weekly focused on core emotion regulation and adaptive coping skills in a framework that promotes motivation and mastery for all learners. Then residents apply what they have learned in daily life. The skills feature ideas for scaffolding learning, a 12-week group curriculum that is also be used in individual skills training, and other practical tools. 3B has developed a Skills System Resident Handbook (see documents) with readings and worksheet that accompany each skill. This program presents skills training guidelines specifically designed for individuals with cognitive challenges. Clinicians learn how to teach core emotion regulation and adaptive coping skills in a framework that promotes motivation and mastery for all learners, and that helps residents apply what they have learned in daily life.
